深刻なアメリカの淡水魚の化学汚染
非営利団体「Environmental Working Group（EWG）」は米デューク大学の研究チームと共同で、自然の魚への汚染の広がりを調べるため、2013～2015年にかけてアメリカの河川や湖から採取した500以上のサンプルを分析した。
その結果、魚1キロあたり9500ナノグラムの有機フッ素化合物が含まれていることが判明し、『Environmental Research』（2022年12月28日付）で発表された。
有機フッ素化合物にはさまざまな種類があるが、検出されたものの4分の3は、一番一般的かつ有害な「ペルフルオロオクタンスルホン酸（PFOS）」だったとのこと。
研究チームによると、こうした魚をたった1匹食べるだけで、PFOSが48 ppt含まれる汚染水を1ヶ月間飲み続けたのに相当するそうだ。
参考までに言うと、アメリカ環境保護庁が定める安全な飲料水のPFOS基準値は0.02 pptだ。また今回魚から検出された量は、一般に流通する魚の278倍ほどであるという。
有機フッ素化合物はテフロン加工のフライパンなど、身近なところに使用されている
人間が汚染した魚が、人間へと戻って来る
なぜ魚にこれほどまで有機フッ素化合物が蓄積されたのか？その原因についてEWGは、産業廃棄物による水質汚染だと指摘している。
EWGのデビッド・アンドリュース氏は、「有機フッ素化合物を製造・使用した企業は河川を汚染しているにもかかわらず、その責任を問われていません」と指摘し、「タンパク源としてや社会的・文化的理由から魚を食べている弱い立場にあるコミュニティへの影響を考えると、とりわけ懸念すべきもの」と述べている。
英リバプール・ジョン・ムーア大学のパトリック・バーン氏は、第三者の立場から、有機フッ素化合物は「21世紀に人類が直面する最大の化学的脅威」だろうと述べ、「魚から人間に直接有機フッ素化合物が広まっているという初の証拠となる」と語った。
アンドリューズ氏らは、不必要な有機フッ素化合物の使用をやめるよう、より厳格な制を求めている。
有機フッ素化合物の規制に関する日本での現状は？
有機フッ素化合物は、日本も参加する「残留性有機汚染物質に関するストックホルム条約（POPs条約）」で、使用・製造・輸出入が原則禁止されるなど、近年規制の強化が進められている。
日本国内では、「化審法」によって製造・輸入が原則禁止。また河川や飲み水に含まれる有機フッ素化合物の暫定的な目標値として、「1リットルあたり50ナノグラム以下」と定められている。
